Hand tracking githubSubmit a concept document for review as early in your Quest application development cycle as possible. Developer Preview Disclaimer : Hand tracking is presented as a developer preview feature in this release. Apps using this feature will not currently be accepted for submission into any Oculus release channel until the feature exits the developer preview phase in a future release. This data is only permitted to be used for enabling hand tracking within your app and is expressly forbidden for any other purpose. The hand tracking feature enables the use of hands as an input method on Oculus Quest devices. It delivers a new sense of presence, enhances social engagement, and delivers more natural interactions with fully tracked hands and articulated fingers. Hand tracking complements the Touch controllers and is not intended to replace controllers in all scenarios, especially with games or creative tools that require a high degree of precision. Using simple hand gestures such as pinch, unpinch, and pinch and hold, you can integrate hands to perform interactions such as select, click, scroll, drag and drop, return, or exit. The hand tracking feature allows you to develop UI elements that can be operated with hands and controllers interchangeably. Use the cursor-pointer to highlight, select, click, or write your own app-level event logic. Apps render hands in the same manner as any other input devices. The following sections help you get started with rendering hands in your app:. This functionality is only supported in the Unity Editor to help improve iteration time for Oculus Quest developers. You can use the sample scene, HandTestto check the default settings and see how hands render in an app. Open this scene and build it. Before you can use hands as input devices, you must enable permissions in the AndroidManifest. In addition to setting permissions in the manifest file, the user must enable hand tracking on their Oculus Quest to use the feature in apps that implement it. Note : This is a project-wide setting that applies to the entire app. Note : For Unity This extra step generates the AndroidManifest. Repeat this step to generate a new AndroidManifest. Users must enable the hand tracking feature on their Oculus Quest to use their hands in a virtual environment. To use hands as input device, you need to manually add them in your scene. Once OVRHandPrefab is added to each hand anchor and configured with the appropriate handedness setting, you can start using hands as input devices. There are several advanced level settings you should consider that affect natural interaction in the app. There are several advanced level settings that influence how hands render and interact with objects in app. OVR Skeleton exposes data such as the skeleton bind pose, bone hierarchy, and capsule collider data. In the Skeleton Type list, select the hand for which you are retrieving the data. For example, hand left. The mesh is configured with attributes such as vertices, uvs, normals, and bone weights. In the Mesh Type list, select the hand for which you are retrieving the data. The hand scale may change at any time and we recommend that you should scale the hand for rendering and interaction at runtime. Note : To use the default reference hand size, leave the checkbox unchecked. Add physics capsules that represent the volume of the bones in the hand. Use this feature to trigger interactions with physical objects and generate collision events with other rigid bodies in the physics system.
Mediapipe hand tracking desktopThis past December, Oculus introduced native hand-tracking functionality for the Oculus Quest, offering users the chance to navigate the Oculus Home interface with their bare hands as opposed to the Touch controllers. At the time of writing, official hand tracking support extends solely to the Oculus Home interface. VR developer Aldin Dynamics recently teased hand-tracking support for its game Waltz of the Wizardbut has yet to confirm when these features will be made available. While it may be some time before we see hand-tracking support for games on the Oculus Store, independent developers are already hard at work building a catalog of VR hand-tracking experiences on SideQuest. The following experiences may be rough — extremely rough in some cases — but each does a commendable job at showcasing a potential use-case for hand-tracking on Oculus Quest. Using a combination of procedural generation and non-euclidean geometry, Tea for God creates impossibly large virtual environments you can traverse by physically walking around your real-world play space. Scattered throughout this endless series of hallways and corridors is an army of robotic enemies programmed to shoot on sight. This is where hand-tracking comes in. Tea for God is available for sideloading here. One of the stranger games on the list, Interdimensional Matter tasks you with repairing endless waves of oddly-shaped client matter using your telekinetic abilities. The process is simple: take the floating mass of matter apart, insert some properly functioning cores, reassemble the body, and hit the button to continue. Thankfully, the game comes with a helpful tutorial mode designed to assist you in getting started with your career as an interdimensional assembly line worker. Interdimensional Matter is available for sideloading here. The title says it all here. Hand-tracking allows you to interact with each individual key like you would on a real piano, though there are no doubt much better ways to tickle the ivories. VirtualPiano is available for sideloading here. Sun Shard originally launched on SideQuest this past August, offering Quest users a fun physics-based sword-slasher similar to that of Blade and Sorcery. As the name suggests, Might of the Gods adds allows you to step into the role of a towering God and rain down vengeance against hordes of enemy creatures using your bare hands. Shoot projectiles from your fingertips, slice through waves of enemies with your ethereal blades, or go old-school and physically flick incoming baddies across the map. Might of the Gods: Sun Shard is available for sideloading here. By pinching your index finger together with your thumb, you activate a digital paintbrush which you can then use to fingerpaint 3D objects across a nearly-infinite canvas. You can choose from a variety of colors to customize your VR masterpiece and even manipulate the size of your art to create everything from massive sculptures to tiny miniatures. Scribble is available for sideloading here. Kyle is a writer for VRScout also working in new media production. He's also a part-time bounty hunter. Share Tweet. Share Tweet Reddit Email. Hand detection androidWhen even the mighty Intel, locker of clocks and remover of multipliers, releases a software overclocking app you know overclocking has gone mainstream. While the hardcore know that BIOS is best, for the rest of us software apps provide the most sane way of easily squeezing more speed from your processor, memory or graphics card from within the friendly Windows environment. To help novice overclockers get started we've put together this collection of best overclocking software. This top 15 list covers everything you need from system information tools, system monitoring and stress tools to the essential overclocking apps themselves. Information is power. These two stand head and shoulders above the rest for their completeness and simplicity. CPU-Z is a comprehensive processor, motherboard and memory report tool that displays live clock rates, bus speeds and voltages, perfect for identifying components and speeds. In a similar move, GPU-Z was developed to do the same but for graphics cards. It manages to pack almost everything you would want into a single program, including system information, a status monitor for fans, voltages and buses, alongside controls to adjust clocks, buses, multipliers and voltages for the processor, HyperTransport and memory. Good work AMD. It has an effective single-click overclocking feature plus a full raft of processor and memory controls and reporting. If you've built your own system then it's highly likely the manufacturer of your motherboard supplied a Windows-based overclocking app. Each company has its own branded tool that will only work with its motherboards or chipset. Other manufacturers have their own, so find out which made your mobo using CPU-Z and download the corresponding tool for easy overclocking. At this point we're starting to delve into the more complex software tools and a pair from the same developer are worth checking out at tweakers. MemSet is a complex memory overclocking tool that provides most of the features you'd expect to find in the BIOS, though a tool like AMD Overdrive also offers many of the same advanced options. As you might expect this version also provides overclocking features for the processor as well. While many covert SetFSB for its advanced options, many will also shun it. But then it can also overclock systems where other options fail. A useful guide to locating your motherboard's PLL chip can be found here. The position, manufacturer and style varies from board to board. Not an essential tool for most but it can be invaluable for some. When it comes to graphics cards, by far the easiest option is to the use the official driver tools. The ATI Overdrive section provides access to a wide, but not full, range of GPU and graphics memory clock speeds plus fan control and temperature readings. For Nvidia owners, you'll need to install nTune and then magically a new Performance section becomes available from the Nvidia Control Panel. Again ultimate clock speeds are limited but it's an easier and official way to start. That's from where this all-in-one graphics overclocking tool takes it name, but it now supports both ATI and Nvidia cards. Riva Tuner should be on your list of graphics overclocking tools as it provides unfettered control of the GPU, memory and even shader clock speeds alongside the usual fan controls. Tensorflow hand tracking
Facebook recently released the experimental controller-free hand tracking feature for the Oculus Quest and a week later they released the hand tracking software development kitallowing developers to start to experiment with the feature. While no official apps on the Oculus store support hand tracking yet, many developers have released demos, games or proof-of-concept applications on SideQuest that utilize the new hand tracking SDK and features. These experiences are not fully-fledged applications or games, but just small and experimental projects that aim to show off the potential of what hand tracking applications and games might look like in the future. All of the apps and games below are available through the SideQuest store, with the exception of Tea for God. It acts as a way to demonstrate and play with all the different interaction types in the SDK. You can check out a video of us playing with the app above. VirtualPiano is exactly what it says — a virtual reality piano that you can play with your hands… kind of. This app definitely falls into the proof-of-concept category and is quite buggy at times. Without haptic feedback, it is incredibly hard to simulate actually playing a piano, but it is a fun example of where we could be heading in the future. VRtuos is similar to VirtualPiano, but much less buggy and with a different purpose. Unlike VirtualPiano, VRtuos actually requires you to own a physical piano, to which you calibrate the app. You can read more about the app here. Unseen Diplomacy popularized the idea of infinite movement in room-scale VR with randomized rooms. The game is best played with controllers, however it was also recently updated to include very experimental and buggy support for controller-free hand tracking on Oculus Quest. This amusing demo is a proof-of-concept game that sees you play as a giant god that swings your hands around to kill little creatures approaching the center of the level. Cubism is a short demo of a full game that is expected to launch into early access at a later point in time. It is a fun puzzle game that allows you to use your hands to fit different sized objects together to solve puzzles. It can also be played with controllers, but was recently updated to include experimental hand tracking support. If you give it a trylet us know what you think. Interdimensional Matter is one of the newer hand tracking experiences on SideQuest that feels simple and short, yet also charming and sweet. It also has a very unique some might say bizarre acapella soundtrack accompanying the gameplay. The SDK comes with a demo app for developers that sees you control a small train on a track, pressing buttons with your fingers to speed up or slow down the train, or have the objects in the environment makes noises. Have you seen anything else or want to let us know about another hand tracking app? Email us at tips uploadvr. For a list of official Oculus store apps that are planning to implement hand tracking at a later date, see our list here. This article was originally published on January 2nd, and was later edited and republished on February 17th, to include new apps and information.
