Broadcom vs ciscoThe incumbent switch makers of the world could learn a thing or two from the server racket. They loved the control — physical and psychological and technical and economic — that the appliance model brought them over those decades. We find this annoying, and celebrate those merchant switch chip makers — Broadcom, Mellanox Technologies, Barefoot Networks, Cavium, and Innovium are the big ones in the datacenter — that talk about their technology in detail. It still is nowhere as deep a dive as we get from the CPU makers of the world, and the elements of the switch are nowhere as close to being itemized as we can do on any server that any OEM or ODM wants to put together. Someday, perhaps. The intimate knowledge that network admins have with these Cisco switch operating systems, paired with different switch ASICs, either homegrown or bought from merchant silicon suppliers, is why Cisco still commands dominant share of the datacenter switching market. But that share has fallen from a very steady 65 percent through the Internet boom down to around 50 percent — and there are reasons for that. The main one is that upstart switch makers have adopted upstart merchant silicon, and they have changed the competitive landscape, pricing, and pace of innovation in the market. And rather than fight them, Cisco has been forced to join them. At least not loudly. This switch is really showing its age a bit, but it is still probably widely used in the financial services industry. The company this week is targeting the incumbency of Cisco Systems and Juniper Networks in Internet routers with a new platform designed to bring the scale, simplicity and workload mobility of data center switching to cloud routing. The modular R features high G Ethernet density with large buffers to support up to 1 million Internet routes. It has a switching capacity of Tbps, Arista says, supports up to wire-speed G ports, and has buffer memory gigabytes deep. Like the earlier generation E and its predecessors, the R also features virtual output queuing to alleviate head-of-line blocking and facilitate lossless forwarding. Cisco and Juniper also support this packet queuing technique in several of their products. What sets the R apart is an Arista software feature called FlexRoute. The R chassis can support earlier generation E line cards but FlexRoute will only work on the new R line cards, according to Arista. The company says its state-oriented NetDB database and EOS software development kit allow cloud providers to customize their own preferred paths across the Internet instead of relying on best-effort forwarding. But the incumbent router vendors have been working for years on tight integration of packet and optical transport. The four- and eight-slot R and R, and the new R line cards are available now. Such architectural commonality reduces product development costs for Cisco and product qualification and deployment testing by customers, although a Cisco-sponsored white paper overstates the architectural benefits in its TCO model by combining the savings from product consistency with the significant scaling and port consolidation benefits of higher throughput switches supporting G and G Ethernet interfaces. All are tapping into a trend towards switches built on openly available chips that was started by the hyperscale cloud operators, but increasingly embraced by enterprises and carriers opting for products from Arista, Juniper and various white box manufacturers.
